About ScaleRail3D

HO Scale 3D Printed Pipe and Cradle Load for realistic model railroad - ScaleRail3D

Hi, I’m James — a British expat from Nottingham, England, now living in Southern California. ScaleRail3D is my one-man operation designing and producing highly detailed 3D printed accessories for HO scale model railroads.

I’ve been around model trains since I was a boy, watching my grandfather run his layout and eventually inheriting his original O scale clockwork tin plate locomotive — a piece that still runs today and sits alongside the very modern 3D printers I use to design new parts. It’s a span of almost a century of model railroading in one family, and that continuity means a lot to me.

Why I Started 3D Printing for Model Railroads

I’ve spent my career working in technology, so when desktop 3D printing became genuinely capable of producing fine-detail hobby parts, it was a natural crossroads of two things I love. I started printing parts for my own layout — and quickly realised I was making things that weren’t available anywhere else at a reasonable price.

What began as solving my own problem became a small business serving fellow modelers who want the same authenticity in their layouts.

The Trenton Layout

My personal layout is called Trenton — a 1970s era industrial layout set in the East Midlands of England, centered on the city of Nottingham where I grew up. It’s a long-term project (life, work, and family have their own schedule), but every ScaleRail3D product is designed with layouts like Trenton in mind — parts that look purposeful, fit realistically, and reward the modeler who takes time to weather and detail them properly.

You can follow the Trenton layout build at BuildingTrenton.com, where many of the ScaleRail3D products are shown in actual use.

How Products Are Made

Every item in the ScaleRail3D range is designed by me from scratch using real-world reference material, then 3D printed in high-detail resin or specialty filaments including iron-infused PLA (which produces genuine surface rust) and wood-fibre filament for realistic timber textures. Products are packed and shipped by hand from Southern California.

There are no subscriptions, no mass imports, no generic parts. Just carefully designed models for people who take their layouts seriously.

Designed for Model Railroaders

Scale Rail 3D creates highly detailed, 3D printed model railroad parts designed for realism, durability, and ease of finishing. Every item is developed with real-world operations and layouts in mind — not just display models.

ScaleRail3D focuses on parts that add practical realism to freight operations, industrial scenes, and layout details. Each piece is designed to be:

  • Accurate in HO scale proportions
  • Easy to paint and weather
  • Strong enough for handling and operation
  • Compatible with common freight cars and layout settings

Whether you’re building a small switching layout or a large operating railroad, these parts are designed to blend naturally into your scenes. See the full range of HO scale models here.
